Journaling and poetry in sport

I was struck - but not surprised - to hear Novak Djokovic speak about the role that classical music, journaling, poetry and stillness have played in his development since childhood.

We know that success comes from physical and mental discipline and effort, but we tend to hear less about the role of internal nurturing.

Yet Olympic athletes often report feeling their lowest after reaching the podium, a gold medal hanging from their neck.

And many people build lives that look perfect on paper, only to find themselves feeling flat, disconnected or unsure what comes next.

We know that achievement has a limited influence on happiness, but we find it hard to shift focus from the dangling carrot of material success.

So what does create fulfilment?

It comes from nurturing three dimensions of ourselves:
Mind — Awareness
Body — Regulation
Soul — Connection

When even one of these areas is neglected, we can feel stuck, regardless of how successful life appears from the outside.

If you're wondering whether there's more to life than this, there is.
It starts inside.
